Aerial Photos of Greenland
|
|
The first aerial photographs of Greenland were taken in 1931. However, the first complete set of aerial photographs of Greenland’s ice-free areas was not produced until 1978. Three additional complete sets were taken in 1981, 1985 and 1987, all at a scale of 1:150,000. Online Viewing Many of the aerial photos of Greenland can be viewed online free of charge. In the Greenland Aerial Photo Database, a basemap of Greenland details where photographs have been taken. Each photo is represented by a red circle. Click on the circles to view a thumbnail of the linked aerial photos and then on the thumbnail for a larger image of the aerial photo and a print function. (Examples of these screens are provided below.) It is important to note that the photos in this database are not oriented to the north, but to their descriptive text. When you print out the full-size image, the photo’s center coordinates are given in UTM zone 24, with a scale in meters. The photo itself is a storage compromised jpeg file with a resolution of 900 x 900 pixels, or 120 pixels per inch at 80% of the original photo size. It is possible to search the Greenland Aerial Photo Database by place name, but this function is still under development and a negative result does not necessarily mean that the aerial photo in question is not available.
